Paper 2 Summary.

In Uncategorized on April 30, 2012 at 2:27 pm

Friends,

below is a summary discussion reagarding Paper 2 preparation fron the OCC:

What is meant by ‘implicit’ and ‘explicit’ in the context of Criterion C?

Implicit response

The response is just a general one and it could be based on any article. In other words there may be a general discussion of biometrics or the use of biometrics in a situation other than in this supermarke
There is a reference to the article without any description or explanation.

Explicit response

The response is clearly linked to the article, it may not mention the scenario by name, but it is clear that this is the subject of discussion. Line numbers and/or direct quotes are not necessary.

The importance of planning the response

It became obvious to the senior examining team that many responses suffered from lack of planning.

Here are some suggestions:

– Use 15 minutes to read the question and write a plan

– Clearly identify all major stakeholders – those directly affected

– Decide which ITGS issue (Guide pg 12) is a concern in this article

– Plan the response (stakeholders, positive and negative impacts)

– From your plan list the possible issues and select the issues that you can confidently discuss

Trigger Words

Sometimes students find it helpful to use trigger words when they are analysing/evaluating impacts. Markers find these words often flag some higher order thinking.

Here are a few examples:

Explanation – because, as a result of, due to, therefore, consequently

Analysis – furthermore, additionally, however, but, conversely, likewise, in addition, on the other hand

Evaluation – my opinion, overall, although, on balance, weighing up

Exam tips….

Friends,

here are some further tips concerning your ITGS exam:

1. As most of the candidates are lacking in the last past of question (the question with maximum marks) in paper1 , so they should be guided to properly use subject specific terms and relate all three strands.  If in the question they are asking to describe social / ethical issues, then the candidate should related the most properly linked points for strand 1. It is extremely important that candidate should remember all points mentioned under strand 1. It will be advisable to write answers in point rather using a paragraph approach. It will make the response much clearer.

2. Paper 2 Criterion A part 1 and criterion B part 2 questions are interrelated, so the candidate should be careful that whatever they are mentioning in criterion A, they have to explain the same under criterion B part 2. In the same manner criterion C and D are related. Candidate should be careful while mentioning the problems under criterion C. At least two problems should be like that for which they can provide solutions under criterion D in well descriptive manner. Mostly candidates think that whenever the word ‘issue’ is used it is only related to problems but it is not like that. Candidate can also mention positive points.
